Booking.com, the world’s leading accommodation website, is looking for a Policy Expert on global short term rental regulation to help drive its global Public Affairs function.
As part of our Amsterdam based Strategic Engagement team, you will have a key role in shaping, managing and implementing our public policy strategy on emerging short term rental regulations around the world.
The successful candidate will cooperate closely with the other members of the Legal and Public Affairs team, as well as with other departments within the company, local offices, and external partners such as consultancies and trade associations. This Public Affairs Manager role reports to the Director of Strategic Engagement and is part of a growing central team focusing on public policy strategy, economic research, policy content and messaging, global initiatives, and non-market strategy.

Key responsibilities
- Monitor, analyze, and evaluate emerging short term rental regulations around the world
- Devise, manage and execute a public policy strategy to shape short term rental regulations in line with business priorities and Booking.com’s corporate profile
- Organize events and create compelling content to drive understanding of Booking.com’s positions and further its reputation among relevant audiences
- Draft presentations, briefings for internal and external meetings, position papers and consultation responses
- Represent the company’s interests by engaging with relevant political and regulatory audiences
- Proactively coordinate and communicate internally to align messaging and provide colleagues with a thorough understanding of developments, including compliance requirements
- Coordinate with external consultants, legal counsel, and relevant trade associations
The ideal candidate for the role will have:
- A bachelor’s degree in Law, Public Policy, Public Administration, Economics, or other relevant field of study
- 5-8 years of relevant experience in a public policy oriented role, e.g. working in a government body, in-house, or consultancy; including
- 3+ years of experience working on short term rental regulations
- Expert understanding of the short term rental policies and regulations in major jurisdictions around the world
- Good understanding of policy and legal challenges facing the tourism and tech industry and affinity with the travel and platform industry
- Excellent oral communications skills and ability to distill complex information into clear messages that will resonate with political and regulatory audiences, as well as into succinct updates for the business teams
- High quality written skills and practical experience in drafting materials for use by regulators, executives or politicians
- Experience developing compelling and effective content that underpin the company’s business objectives
- Outstanding organizational abilities, in particular, the capacity to manage multiple work streams at one time and the proactivity to drive work programmes forward and co-ordinate the involvement of all relevant stakeholders
- Experience working in fast-paced, multicultural environments
- Experience with managing sensitive reputational issues and/or crises
- Ability to engage directly with policy makers and to act as a spokesperson for the business
- Fluent English with additional languages a benefit
- Self-starter that is also an excellent team player
- Strong influencing skills and ability to inspire confidence, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships at all level
- High level of integrity with ability to develop both internal and external credibility
